What is the MFK?
The Motorfahrzeugkontrolle (MFK) is Switzerland's vehicle roadworthiness inspection – comparable to Germany's TÜV. Every vehicle registered in Switzerland for the first time must pass this test, including well-maintained import vehicles from Germany.
What is Checked?
- Brakes: Braking performance, condition of pads and discs
- Lighting: All lights functional, headlights correctly aligned (important: European headlights must be adapted for right-hand traffic)
- Steering and axles: Play, condition of bearings and joints
- Suspension: Shock absorbers, springs, wheel alignment
- Emissions: Compliance with Swiss emission limits
- Bodywork: Rust, frame integrity
- Interior: Seatbelts, airbag warning lights
Swiss-Specific Adaptations
European vehicles typically have headlights calibrated for left-hand traffic. In Switzerland, right-hand traffic applies – headlights must be adjusted or replaced at a cost of CHF 80–200.
What Happens if There Are Defects?
If defects are found during the MFK, the vehicle owner is given a deadline to rectify them. Minor defects can often be fixed immediately. Serious defects may result in immediate immobilisation.
Vehicle Registration
After passing the MFK, the vehicle can be registered at the cantonal road traffic office. You will need: MFK certificate, customs proof, original vehicle registration, ID document and proof of liability insurance.
